On September 6, 2025, at 7:00 PM, a monographic concert by cellist and composer Jakub Gucik will take place at Hashtag Lab in Warsaw.
Gucik will give the world premiere of a cycle of 12 etudes, composed as part of a Scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage:
“When preparing new works or collaborating with composers, I often hear the opinion that the possibilities of string instruments have been exhausted. Most people tend to explore wind instruments, object-based instruments, ethnic instruments, and electronics. Meanwhile, instrumental techniques continue to evolve — the spectacular knocks, strikes, and scrapings of the 1960s, or the pressure experiments with bow and left-hand fingers popularized in the late 20th century, are not the end of the cello’s potential.
In my 12 etudes for solo cello, I explore rarely used extended techniques such as various manipulations of the instrument’s resonance, multiphonics, pizzicati on different parts of the instrument, dyads, overtones, and subtones — approaching the cello more like an analog synthesizer or a physical object than a noble instrument weighed down by centuries of tradition and rich symbolism.”
The Hashtag Lab Contemporary Music Space is co-financed by the City of Warsaw.
