On September 4, 2025, Marta Cienkowska, Minister of Culture and National Heritage, awarded Mieczysław Kominek the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture “Gloria Artis”, in accordance with the Act on Organizing and Conducting Cultural Activities.
Mieczysław Kominek – musicologist, sound engineer, publicist, journalist, and organizer of musical life – has worked at Polish Radio as editor, journalist, and sound engineer; at the Documentary Film Studio as a sound operator; and at the Polish Music Publishing House as an editor.
In 1987, he earned a PhD in the humanities with a dissertation titled “The Development of Technology and the Formation of Phonographic Musical Awareness.” He lectured at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw.
After returning to Polish Radio in 1991, he established the Cultural News Editorial Office, which launched the first cultural news bulletin in the history of Polish Radio. He served as its head until 1994.
He founded the record and radio magazine Studio, serving as its editor-in-chief. He also worked at the Warsaw Chamber Opera as a publishing specialist.
He held the position of President of the Board of Polskie Nagrania (Polish Recordings). In 2001, he founded the Polish Music Information Centre (POLMIC) under the Polish Composers’ Union, representing Poland in the International Association of Music Information Centres (IAMIC). Since then, he has served as the Director of POLMIC.
A member of the Polish Composers’ Union since 1973, he was a member of the Main Board Presidium (1997–99), served as Vice President (1999–2003), Secretary General (2003–2009), and for ten years President of the Union (2015–2025).
He is also a member of the Polish Society for Contemporary Music and the Witold Lutosławski Society. From 2005 to 2011, he served as a board member of the International Association of Music Information Centres.
