The National Scientific Conference "The Female Side of Music", organized by the Department of Music Theory and Media Communication at the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, will take place on May 8, 2026. Admission is free.
The conference addresses contemporary research in the field of gender studies regarding the forgotten or overlooked role of women in the social discourse of past eras. Music is a domain where a culturally conditioned division was clearly defined for centuries. The possibilities for women’s artistic activity were dictated by prevailing social norms. Female creators, in particular, faced significant challenges; therefore, the conference discussions will focus primarily on the perspectives and experiences of female composers. While the 20th century reoriented their difficult situation compared to previous eras, echoes of this cultural split continue to exist even today.
The themes proposed by the organizers have met with an extensive response from the academic community. The program will feature presentations by researchers representing institutions from Poznań, Katowice, Warsaw, Bydgoszcz, Lublin, Wrocław, Częstochowa, and Gdańsk. The issues addressed have been grouped into three main areas: syntheses accounting for social conditions, research centered on individual profiles of female composers across different eras, and selected aspects of women's creative output.
The Chair of the Organizing Committee and project coordinator is Professor Joanna Schiller-Rydzewska, PhD.
