At the second concert of the season by the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, we will hear compositions by Grażyna Bacewicz, Fryderyk Chopin, and Become Ocean, a contemporary work by American composer John Luther Adams. On October 11, 2024, at 7:00 PM, the orchestra will be conducted by Georgian conductor Mirian Khukhunaishvili, with French pianist Jonathan Fournel as the soloist.
Mirian Khukhunaishvili is the first winner of the Ringmann-Jaross Award, a program supporting young musicians founded by Christoph Eschenbach. Jonathan Fournel's brilliant career took off in 2021 when he won the Grand Prix—Queen Elisabeth Prize at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium.
The evening will begin with Grażyna Bacewicz's Overture for Symphony Orchestra, which, in the words of Stefan Kisielewski, is a composition "sparkling with life, rushing as if on the wings of rhythmic temperament." Next, we will hear Fryderyk Chopin’s youthful, radiant Piano Concerto in F minor. In the second half of the concert, we will experience Become Ocean, a single-movement composition by John Luther Adams, for which he won both the Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award. In 2019, The Guardian journalists named it one of the ten most important compositions of the 21st century so far.
This event is part of the International Congress "City – Water – Quality of Life" 2024.
