The Baltic Opera in Gdańsk invites you on May 31 at 6:00 PM and June 1, 2025 at 5:00 PM to the Polish premiere of new operas created as part of the international B.U.T.T.E.R.F.L.Y. project, developed in collaboration with Teatro Comunale in Modena, Opera BOX in Helsinki, and the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk.
The performance on May 31 will be preceded by a meeting at 5:00 PM in the Opera foyer with the composers and soloists involved in the project. They will talk about their work and the challenges of the collaborative endeavor.
The foundation of the project lies in moving stories created by high school students from Italy, Finland, and Poland, which were transformed into librettos by Vincenzo De Vivo, Mirva Koivukangas, and Jagoda Jagson, and subsequently set to music by Marco Attura, Paavo Korpijaakko, and Beniamin Baczewski.
Each part—Hengitä (Breathe) by Finnish composer Paavo Korpijaakko, Perla di Speranza (Pearl of Hope) by Italian composer Marco Attura, and Jezioro Popiołów (Lake of Ashes) by Beniamin Baczewski—tells a different story, but all are united by a shared message. The resulting work is an artistic response to contemporary ecological challenges and a powerful voice from the young generation engaged in the fight for a better future for our planet.
The project was carried out in collaboration with environmental and technological partners from across Europe, creating a unique fusion of art, science, and social engagement.
The B.U.T.T.E.R.F.L.Y. project is an example of a sustainable approach to culture—encompassing both stage production and methods of communication with audiences.
The "Butterfly" project received funding from the European Union’s Creative Europe program. It was also co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund—a state special-purpose fund.
