Poland and France: Sacred Choral Music at the NFM

Krzysztof Penderecki – one of the great masters of 20th-century art – remained devoted to sacred choral music throughout his entire career. On February 9, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the NFM Choir, conducted by its Artistic Director Lionel Sow, will perform a variety of works by the artist, who passed away in 2020, alongside outstanding 20th-century French compositions.

The concert will open with Euntes ibant et flebant by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. The presentation of Penderecki’s works will begin with Song of the Cherubim – one of many examples in his output inspired by church music. The audience will also hear Stabat Mater, which the composer, once involved in the avant-garde, later incorporated into his famous Passion According to St. Luke. Other highlights include the contemplative hymn O gloriosa virginum and Agnus Dei – the fifth movement of Polish Requiem, dedicated to Stefan Wyszyński.

In the 20th century, Polish and French musical cultures developed under vastly different conditions. However, their encounter on stage will reveal some surprising common elements. Works by Alfred Desenclos, Jean Yves Daniel-Lesur, Caroline Marçot, Francis Poulenc, and Maurice Ravel will also be performed.
