On May 13, 2026, at 8.00 pm at Przystań Sztuki in Poznań, a concert titled "The Birth of Sound" will take place. This original project is a collaboration between pianist Emilia Karolina Sitarz and composer Sławomir Wojciechowski. The program features the world premiere of Wojciechowski’s new composition for two prepared upright pianos and city sounds. Admission to the event is free.
Emilia Karolina Sitarz is the creator of the entire concert series titled "PrePPiano", during which she performs on "worn-out" instruments: old, out-of-tune pianos that have been withdrawn from concert use. Here, their imperfection is not a flaw, but a starting point. The artists employ preparation techniques, extended sound possibilities, and improvisation, building the form in real-time. The project subverts the logic of novelty and perfection that dominates our culture. Instead of a "perfect" sound, it offers a sound "with a history", emerging from the physicality of the instrument, its material, and years of use. Wood, metal, string tension, and the traces of touch etched into the instrument become integral elements of the composition. As the creators emphasize, the starting point is also a reflection on the circulation of objects in culture: "By constantly buying new things, we lose the ability to see the value in what already exists. Meanwhile, worn, battered matter, deemed useless, can generate a new quality – in this case, sound".
In its musical layer, the project draws on the aesthetics of György Kurtág and Morton Feldman, for whom micro-changes, silence, and precise work on individual sounds were essential. These references serve as a starting point for improvisation developed in relation to the specific instrument and space.
