Released by the Polish Radio Music Agency, the album Violand (PRCD 2479) will premiere on 12 September 2025 — the first crossover viola album in the history of Polish recording, showcasing the instrument’s many facets: classical (Lipiński), modern (Bacewicz, Lutosławski, Weinberg, Penderecki, Sewen, Moc, Skweres), experimental (Wieczorek), electronic (Gudonis by Komendarek), and minimal music / so-called neoclassical (OS.SO).
The playlist is divided into two chapters featuring composers from different eras. The first part presents works by deceased composers — from Lipiński to Penderecki — highlighting the richness of Polish classical music of past generations. The second part is dedicated to contemporary composers, emphasizing the dynamic, versatile, and diverse nature of modern Polish viola repertoire. The program reveals the viola’s full expressive and technical potential — its performance range, articulation, dynamics, and even its fusion with electronics.
The works are performed by violist Krzysztof Komendarek-Tymendorf, both solo and in duet with Zuzanna Ossowska as MonoTony Ænsemble.
Professor Komendarek-Tymendorf is also the founder of the global social campaign “ReVIOLAtion – The Viola Revolution”, which promotes music for this unique and noble instrument. The first album under this campaign, titled ReVIOLAtion, was released in 2020 by NAXOS Records.
Violand is dedicated by Krzysztof Maria Komendarek-Tymendorf to his daughter, Lea Klementyna.
