"Sky Tower" is a name that all Wrocław residents associate with the skyscraper that has dominated the skyline of the Lower Silesian capital for more than a decade (and thus its typically metropolitan skyline, as seen from afar). Władysław Szymański, a well-known organist and rector of the Academy of Music in Katowice, has titled his latest work in the same way, which he will personally premiere during a recital at the NFM on the 20th of December, 2023 at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to his own composition, we will hear works by some of the most prominent composers of music for the instrument from the late 19th and early 20th centuries - a period when, thanks to improvements made in its construction, composers were able to draw on inspirations absent from the organ literature of previous centuries. Festival Toccata by Percy Fletcher, Organ Sonata No. 2 in E minor by August Gottfried Ritter, several arrangements of Christmas carols and pastorals from Alexandre Guilmant's four-volume collection Livre de Noëls, and Charles-Maria Widor's Organ Symphony No. 5 will be performed.
