13th edition of the Student-Doctoral Conference "Neofonia"

On January 8-9, 2025 at the initiative of the Artistic and Scientific Association of Composition and Music Theory Students at the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, the 13th edition of the Student-Doctoral Conference "Neofonia" will take place. The conference will be accompanied by an Interuniversity Composers' Concert. The deadline for submitting applications is December 30, 2024.

The various aspects of freedom and autonomy in 20th and 21st-century musical works have inspired the organizers to discuss the theme of "(under)statements" in music. These "non-statements" primarily refer to the structural aspects of the work and the presence of elements unplanned in the performance of contemporary music.

Students and doctoral candidates from music academies, composers, musicologists, music theorists, and conductors are eligible to participate in the conference. The proposed research areas and topics related to this year's theme include:

- Freedom in the formal construction of a work – open form, improvisational elements in a musical work, aleatoric music, chance as a compositional tool, the formal boundary between improvisation and planned form;

- Notation of works with free elements – the issue of notation methods, graphic notation, graphic scores;

- Performative elements – open performative elements, performativity in improvisational form, freedom of movement in interpreting musical works;

- Freedom created by interactivity in new media music;

- Soundpainting and similar conducting sign systems used for live music creation;

- Tools for analysis and interpretation of music with open elements;

- Analysis of the temporal progression of compositions containing free elements;

- Cultural-sociological positioning of music with improvised elements.

The presentation time at the conference is 20 minutes; the duration of a chamber work presented during the concert is up to 6 minutes.

As part of this year's “Neofonia”, an Interuniversity Composers' Concert will be held on January 8, 2025, at 18:00 in the Aula Nova concert hall of the Poznań Academy of Music. The submitted works may be acoustic, acousmatic, mixed media, or performative, with an ensemble of no more than 10 performers. The organizers do not provide performers. In the case of works intended for multi-speaker projection, a binaural version must be prepared.

Those wishing to actively participate in the conference or composers interested in presenting their works are requested to send abstracts of their papers or scores, along with the application form to the email address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.by the deadline of December 30, 2024.

Scores and abstracts must be sent to the organizer by January 3, 2025. Incomplete submissions or those sent after the aforementioned deadlines will not be considered. The organizers reserve the right to select the submitted scores and abstracts, and to cancel or change the event's date without providing a reason. The organizer also reserves the right to record and later publish all events taking place as part of this year's edition.
