From September 27th to 29th, 2024, the 18th International Conference "Organs and Organ Music" will be held at the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. Organists, music theorists, musicologists, and organ builders have been invited to participate in the event, where they will share their research and reflections on a wide range of topics related to organs, organ construction, performance issues, and the analysis of organ works. Admission is free! The conference will be accompanied by the 12th International Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Organ Competition (September 26th–29th), which will feature an Interpretation Competition, an Improvisation Competition, and three concerts (ticketed entry).
The International Conference "Organs and Organ Music," organized since 1977, is the oldest event of its kind in Poland with international standing. The previous sessions have resulted in the publication of sixteen volumes, many of which are available from the Publishing House of the Academy of Music in Gdańsk. This year's event is organized by the Department of Organs, Harpsichord, Accordion, Guitar, Harp, and Historical Instruments, as well as the Department of Music Theory. Thanks to co-organizers—the Baltic Philharmonic and the Pomeranian Association "Musica Sacra"—the concerts will be held at the Oliwa Cathedral and the Philharmonic.
The conference will feature representatives from the most important centers of organ music in Europe, professors from Music Academies, jurors of the 12th International Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Organ Competition, as well as students from music institutions, who will present their research in the form of posters. Additionally, we will hear presentations on contemporary Polish music, including the organ works of Roman Berger, Marian Sawa, Kazimierz Guzowski, Hanna Kulenty, Maciej Zakrzewski, and the traditions of accompanying silent films in the Second Polish Republic and today.
The project is funded by the state budget, granted by the Ministry of Education and Science under the "Excellent Science II" program.
Honorary patronage: Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Mieczysław Struk, Mayor of Gdańsk Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, Rector of the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk Prof. Ryszard Minkiewicz.
