The Faculty of Composition, Music Theory, and Sound Engineering, along with the Department of Music Theory at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, invites you to participate in the International Scientific Conference "Musical Folklorism from the Perspective of the Creator, Researcher, and Performer", which will take place on April 24–25, 2025. The deadline for submitting applications is February 10.
"I was afraid of folklore... I had to mature to it in order to skillfully combine the musical world of my grandmother with my own musical experiences and ideas about what valuable folklorism should be today," says Marcin Gumiela, a composer raised in a musical, multi-generational family, and the grandson of Marianna Gumiela, whose traditional singing was preserved on CDs from the "Muzyka źródeł" (Music of the Sources) series. The successive waves of folklorism in Polish music, as well as the observed "folk turn" in the last decade, seen in all aspects of Polish culture, inspire research on the phenomenon of the coexistence of folk, traditional, communal culture and so-called professional, individual music.
The proposed scope of research includes aesthetic, theoretical-musical reflections, and issues related to performance and realization. Therefore, the organizers invite composers, musicologists, music theorists, ethnomusicologists, music sociologists, performers, and sound recording professionals to share their research findings. Their knowledge and experience will allow for a broad scientific overview of this issue.
Proposals for presentations, including abstracts (up to 1500 characters with spaces) and a brief biography (up to 300 characters), should be submitted in both Polish and English versions by February 10, 2025, via email to Monika Biesaga, M.A., at
In case of a high number of submissions, the organizers reserve the right to select the papers.
Those whose proposals are accepted will be notified by email by February 20, 2024.
After receiving confirmation of acceptance as a conference participant, the conference fee of 400 PLN must be paid by March 15 to the account of the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music.
