The Silesian Quartet is focusing this season on one of the most intriguing figures in Polish music of the last century. The artists will present the works of Sir Andrzej Panufnik in celebration of the 110th anniversary of birth of the only Polish composer awarded a noble title by Queen Elizabeth II. On October 12, 2024, at 6:00 PM, we will hear his 1st String Quartet performed by the ensemble, as well as works by British composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar.
Andrzej Panufnik faced many restrictions on his creative freedom, first due to World War II and later communism. He found freedom through his escape to Great Britain, where, in the early years in his new country, he received support from British colleagues, including Ralph Vaughan Williams. The concert program will feature, among other pieces, Vaughan Williams' String Quartet in G minor.
Also on the program is one of the most beautiful chamber works of the 20th century – Edward Elgar's Piano Quintet in A minor.
