"Perypetie antycznych kochanków" (The Adventures of Ancient Lovers) is the title of a concert at the NOSPR on December 19, 2024, at 7:30 PM. The orchestra and Irish pianist Paul Lewis will perform under the baton of Artistic Director Marin Alsop.
In the Andante of Ludwig van Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, romantics saw allusions to the figure of Orpheus pleading with the Furies to return his beloved. It will be interesting to see if these allusions come through in the interpretation of Paul Lewis, who was the first to perform all five of Beethoven's piano concertos in a single season at the BBC Proms in 2010.
The concert will begin with the performance of Introduction and Caprice by Grażyna Bacewicz, which was awarded at the Karol Szymanowski Competition. The second part of the concert will offer a feast for the senses, featuring Richard Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel and Maurice Ravel, who paints the idyllic picture of Longos’s pastoral love in the second of his orchestral suites from the ballet Daphnis and Chloé, reflecting the finale of the ancient lovers' adventures.
Before the concert, at 6:30 PM, a pre-concert talk will be held in the chamber hall, where journalist Róża Światczyńska will discuss the pieces being performed that evening.
