World premiere of the Concerto "Kinesthesis" by Tomasz Jakub Opałka

Information about the event | Katowice | 10 October 2025

On October 10, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Silesian Philharmonic, tradition will meet new musical experiences. For the first time, the concerto "Kinesthesis" by Tomasz Jakub Opałka for piano, cello, and orchestra will be performed. The work was written with the Cracow Duo—Marek Szlezer and Jan Kalinowski—in mind.

The composition, full of energy and modern sounds, draws inspiration from the intensity of rhythms and structures reminiscent of rock riffs, blending them with the symphonic power of the orchestra. The composer himself describes this concerto as a post-prog-rock piece due to its “drive,” energy, and the “rough” harmonies it contains. In Kinesthesis, there are no stylizations, quotations, or direct references to rock music. The form-shaping elements of the work also include gestures, their repetition, trance-like quality, the way the body prepares to perform them, and a certain ritualistic character.

The evening will be completed by two masterpieces of the world repertoire: Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55 “Eroica,” performed by the Silesian Philharmonic under the baton of Yaroslav Shemet.

The event is co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the program “Composer Commissions,” implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
