Australian Chamber Orchestra & NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra

On March 16, 2025, at 18:00, Richard Tognetti, conductor and artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, will return to Wrocław. Together with the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra, conducted by Christian Danowicz, they will present interpretations of various works – from Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto, through pieces by composers of the last century such as Pavel Haas and Witold Lutosławski, to an intriguing composition by Bryce Dessner – an artist from the famous indie rock band The National – which serves as a tribute to the patron of the NFM.

Witold Lutosławski's Musique funebre, written during the years of mourning, was created at the initiative of maestro Jan Krenz, who asked him to compose a work commemorating the tenth anniversary of Béla Bartók's death. However, the final result also marked a new, important chapter in the artist's life. "It represents for me the beginning of a new period, the result of long lasting experiments. I tried to create a set of means that would become my own. And this is the first word spoken in this new language for me, though by no means the last one," Lutosławski recalled about the solemn-sounding piece.

Réponse Lutosławski, on the other hand, is a work in which Bryce Dessner refers to Musique funebre. "My response to Lutosławski’s music is that he opened a window to a certain area for me, and I then set off on my own journey. (…) One could say that I wrote eight short poems, though it was Lutosławski who wrote the first line of each of them," he emphasized in one of his interviews for the magazine “Dwutygodnik”.
