VII Piotr Perkowski Composition Competition

Media patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

The Foundation for the Assistance and Development of the Music School Complex in Toruń and the Karol Szymanowski Music School Complex in Toruń announce the VII Piotr Perkowski Composition Competition. This competition is intended for students of secondary music schools in Poland and for composers born no earlier than 2002. The task is to compose a piece inspired by one of the movements of an ancient Baroque suite. Submissions should be submitted by email till August 29, 2024, by 11:59 PM.

The goal of the competition is to restore the harpsichord’s role as a solo instrument and to emphasize the importance of genres, forms, and techniques that emerged during the Baroque era.

School ensembles and soloists will perform the pieces, so the level of difficulty must take into account the capabilities of students from a second-level music school. The solo instrument will be a French harpsichord, one-manual with two octave registers.

The piece should last between 4 and 7 minutes.

Each composer may submit more than one piece in each category (up to three pieces maximum).

The competition consists of two stages. In the first stage, the jury will select compositions to be performed during the final concert (second stage). The performance of the selected pieces will take place on December 12, 2024, at the Concert Hall of the Music School Complex in Toruń. After the concert, the jury will decide on the award recipients.

Three financial prizes are expected to be awarded in each category, with a total prize pool of 8,000 PLN. The jury may also grant additional non-regulatory awards.
